I had this thought tonight in the "Every Man's Battle" class while I was teaching...
I wonder how Barna is defining "in the church" in this statistic. Is he simply including everyone who just goes to church, or is he considering "in the church" as professing Christians who are living the life outside of the the church services?

I'm not saying divorce doesn't tragically hit homes of couples who walk with God together, but it HAS to be a whole lot harder to bust those marriages up when the couple is communing with the Lord... just a thought.

Interesting post, Jeff. Divorce just pains me.. Clayton and I both come from divorced homes and we know, first-hand, how awful the aftermath is for families.

From my personal perspective, I believe the reason the divorce rate is so high (no matter what religious belief a person has) is simply because men and women today fail to become "one flesh" as directed in scripture. What "one flesh" means is up for debate I suppose, but I see a lot of evidence in present day marriages that suggest that we want to hold onto our own individual lives apart from our spouses in a way that makes a marriage crumble. If we were "one flesh" then we would really feel what our partner feels.. We would avoid hurting them in any way because it would literally hurt us in the process. How would divorce be possible if we simply followed scripture and came together as one flesh from the beginning?

As for remarriage in the church... that one is so touchy and tricky. I won't even touch it... but I have mixed feelings on it. We should forgive.. but do modern churches even acknowledge the reasons for the past failed relationships anymore? I know our church does... but do most? I feel like we as a church just allow people to remarry without ever REALLY looking at why the first marriage failed - leaving history to repeat itself. I guess we wouldn't want to be accused of being "judgemenal" now, would we? ;)
