Great comments, Dean! I think you're "spot on" (as our Brit brothers would say) when you say that obedience and availability are cherished by God. I agree with you.

One thing that escapes us because it's so simple is the joyful delight of reflecting the character of our Father. We were created in His image to bear it to the ends of the earth. He desires to be glorified, and as Piper says, we'll be most truly satisfied when we orient our lives to bring Him glory. So, one of the great privileges of being a Christ-follower is to demonstrate God to the world through our own lives.

He is holy, so we seek to reflect His holiness by pursuing that.
He is righteous, so we seek to align our lifestyles in a way that would allow us to reflect that.
He is loving, so we practice love.
He is kind, so we apply kindness to situations and relationships.
He sent His Son to bring salvation to all, so we also go in His name to continue His mission, thereby displaying His heart.

Thanks for the extended comment! It could have been a great post on your site, but you unselfishly shared it here!

ok... here's my "WOW"... now i'll try and answer your questions... they are for answering, arent they?

to me holiness often times involves doing things that i might not necessarily want to do... things that wont necessarily make me HAPPY (or sometimes its NOT doing things that i would like to do that WOULD make me happy). too many Christians think that its God's duty to make us happy. that the Christian life is a happy life... i guess this is because too many Christians, when witnessing to non believers, TELL them that if they trust Jesus, their life will be wonderful and great and better than ever... Jesus invited us to a crucifixion, for goodness sake. He wants us to be obedient, and He wants us to be available. that to me is the essence of holiness... being ready and willing to do whatever God has in store for us, when He tells us He wants us to do it. now then, if our hearts are right, there is much JOY in obedience... big difference between joy and happiness.

i feel like i'm getting a pretty firm grasp of a correct understanding of God... but i continue to be a work in progress. as you know from recent posts of mine, He's rocked my world a couple of times concerning pre-conceived notions i've had.. maybe not directly concerning my understanding of Him specifically, but certain parts of "church life" that i've always taken for granted, and could easily have just tossed aside and said "that's not in line with what i've been fed all my Christian life, therefore i reject that without a second thought." i think that's another part of holiness... being willing to grapple with ideas that challenge my Christian worldview, rahter than ignoring them because they make me feel uncomfotable.

my entire early Christian life was full of compromises, but i find myself more and more being repulsed by the thought of compromising on faith issues. i hate to sound like i think i have no faults, but i'm just at a time in my life (i'm 50, so its about time, right?:-) where i'm fed up with compromising and taking the path of least resistance. still, a work in progress...

This is probably the best post I've read in a while, probably because the subject of collegiate ministry is so near to my heart, but whatever, WOW!!! I wish I was there.
