Mike,

By the way, in these heady days of app development for the iPhone and iPad, many developers have discovered profit. We know the stories of the "rags to riches" approach. Many of these developers have bypassed traditional software marketing techniques which include providing a 30-day demo. Adobe, Apple, Microsoft... well, you know what I mean. EVERY reputable company allows a demo of their software for the consumer.

It's amazing to me that the App Store doesn't have this yet. Even with software that you pay for via jailbreak, there are demo opportunities! (See Intelliscreen, qTweeter).

With that being said, I think the industry as a whole has modeled this demo philosophy well. I think it's unethical when people "crack" these demos for longterm use. THAT is stealing.

However, when a consumer wants to "try" an app - and these apps add up - on the App Store, he is forced to purchase blindly. Even the Lite versions do not give the consumer a preview of the paid features that one is probably buying the app for to begin with.

Since the software model is already there, why can't developers build in a trial version or mode? It's not stealing if you buy it. Informed, educated consumers are not lemmings who want to demonstrate bad stewardship by throwing away $2 here and $10 there.

In addition, many of these developers have encountered a "rags to riches" story. "Steve Demeter, developer of the vastly popular $5 iPhone game Trism, announced he made $250,000 in profit in just two months. His team? Himself, mainly, with a little bit of help from a friend and a contracted designer (whom he paid $500). If his profits continue at this rate, Demeter will earn nearly $2 million by July 2009." (Story sourced by link above, written 9.08)

You are probably aware of dozens of other astonishing success stories. All I'm saying is... let's create a model in which it's appropriate, expected and right for consumers to be able to demo software before purchase.... Oh wait. That model already exists.

Mike,
All they did was consolidate all the Lite apps into one place that were already there. They didn't enable (like Google Android has) a policy of return an app within 30 days after purchase. Even that would be better. As it is, the software policies are unfair to consumers, because we have no recourse when we purchase an app that is unstable, inconsistent or simply doesn't live up to its own hype.

I happily pay for any and all software that I use and keep. I can't speak for everyone, obviously, in the known universe.

Here's one less reason for you to steal apps.

@Rick: Good point. Apple does not allow for returns. But you took the movie theater analogy too far. The premise was you used something without permission, which in this case is stealing; not something a pastor should be advocating to his followers.

Would you go to a movie that didn't have a trailer, reviews or an IMDB page? Why buy an app like that? Just move on; there are plenty of alternatives. Plus, it's the developer's choice to make a YouTube video demoing their app, provide a lite version, submit to the dozen or so iOS/mobile app review websites and whatever other marketing they can do.

Seriously, if the app's icon, description, ratings, reviews, screen shots and the developer's website on the Apple App Store are not enough information and evidence of quality for you to form an opinion, it's probably not what you're looking for. Move on, but don't try to justify ripping the developers off. That's just sleazy and dishonest.

Also, if you're complaining about wasting a few bucks on an app, that's so insignificant compared to the $500+ you spent to buy it in the first place. Give the app a bad review with some constructive criticism and find an app that's better. You might find the developer actually listens and puts in exactly what you need.

@Mike: But you don't need to do that. Every movie that hits a theater will have a trailer. Multiple trailers. Reviews. A summary on IMDB with information such as who directed it, wrote it, produced it, starred in it... A bounty of information to develop an opinion about an app. Unless a dev offers a 'Lite' version, which may or may not showcase the feature(s) you're looking for, you're left in the dark with no recourse.

But to run with your analogy, I challenge you to buy a movie ticket, watch a portion of the movie, then leave, complain to a manager, and tell me you didn't get either a refund, or a free ticket.

I've got nothing but love for mine. It's so useful I rarely use my laptop. I'm not too crazy about the Sobees Lite app, as it doesn't alert me to new feedback notifications. However facebook desktop version doesn't do too bad in the browser. The atomic web browser actually let's you do facebook chat if you want.

I use twitellator for my Twitter app. I don't need to sync my Twitter stuff to the desktop so that's a moot issue for me. The only complaint there is it doesn't show my tweets, retweeted properly.

Ive read more than ever now that I have it. I guess it's because it's always with me so I can read during any "down" moment. And I agree the youversion app is amazing!

I'm looking for an excuse to hook it up to a projector and do some keynote stuff now that I have the vga dock connector. I'm pretty impressed with keynote and pages.

Well, found something I hate about it. It won't do iframe box scrolls at all. So I have goofed up my comment here by going above the below paragraph to edit something, now I can't go back to the bottom of this and continue. In fact my ADD brain has already forgotten what I typed down there or if I even finished my thought!

I'm going to check out chronicle. Too. Sounds like something I could use!

I've got to get a netflix account. As soon as I do, Ill be streaming on it.

Oh, finally figured out how to scroll on down in this box. Good thing too, autocorrect almost made me sound like I flunked hooked on phonics.

Jeff, if you sneaked into a movie theater, watched a movie then only paid for it if you liked it, wouldn't that be stealing too? There is a mechanism for application developers to allow you to preview their apps; it's called a "Lite" version. So if they don't create a lite version for you to try, that's their decision and you should let them know rather than steal their app.

There are plenty of app review sites for you to figure out if an app is worth buying. Here's one such site:

http://www.appolicious.com/

There are plenty more, but check them out if you're unsure whether to purchase that next app.

Thanks!

Really, helpful, thanks. I think I will snag one eventually (not an early adopter). I could imagine it replacing my laptop a good chunk of the time. Does it for you? I'm hoping at some point it will be able to run Word, etc.
