Macintosh myths
David Alison has a great post detailing some commonly-heard excuses for not buying Macs or not thinking that a Mac would be the solution for you and your family. Let me know which one you’ve heard the most or your own “myth.”
I think I hear the “Macs are more expensive myth” most often. Remember, you get what you pay for.

Notes from the Trail

I’m a techie who became interested in macs after recording a music project in a protools based studio. I hated them…until I saw OS X.
I tapped out a few Unix commands in Terminal, and I was sold. It was exactly what I was looking for…a good stable *nix based desktop that wasn’t as crazy to maintain as the other options.
So I bought an iBook, and after some initial frustrations had a great time with it. It’s still in use by my sister-in-law.
And here’s the problem….I replaced it with a macbook.
The macbook has not been the best experience. It gets hot and the fan kicks in constantly. It scratches up and gets dingy. The CD drive has given out. The harddrive has died once, and had to be replaced. The wireless started acting wiggy a couple months ago (and it is def. the laptop).
This is after less than 18 months, and 95% of the time it sits on a desk or our laps on the couch. It’s probably been on 10 long trips, and maybe 30 trips to the local coffee shop. I’m very careful with it.
In other words…hardware-wise I’ve found it to be a piece of junk. And that would be fine if it were a cheap piece of junk. But it’s not. I could have gotten 2 dells for the money I’ve put into this thing.
I just can’t recommend the laptops anymore until they get their act together.
Mike,
Hate that you’ve had problems with the Macbook. I’ve had mine (and two others like it) for more than a year and have had NO problems. Well, I take that back… the plastic near the edge of the trackpad cracked, but after a call to Apple, two different laptops were sent off and repaired within a 3-day span, each – for free.
It goes back to this post I made a while back about Apple’s customer service. It’s amazing. Everyone acknowledges that. Consumer News & Reports consistently finds that Apple ranks #1 in customer satisfaction among ALL computer manufacturers.
So, while I hate your experience, I have to encourage you to simply “pitch a fit” with Apple. They will make it good on your behalf, I’m confident.
On top of that, I am just now starting to get the cravings for an updated Macbook (mine is the Intel Core Duo 1.83ghz). Maybe someday!
