It’s called spiritual discernment. And there doesn’t seem to be much of it these days in the western church.
Jesus told us to beware of false prophets in Matthew 7.15. Yet we naively and ignorantly refuse to acknowledge their very real existence today. Is it for fear of offending them? The apostle John exhorts us to “not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” (1 John 4.1)
Others have written longer and better explanations of heresy, false prophets and prophecy, but I wanted to point you to a blog that details the continuing biblical abuses of the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN). It has audio clips from some of TBN’s most popular figures that may serve to open your eyes. I encourage you to use extreme discernment when watching TBN. It’s a muddy pond at best. At worst, its an ongoing platform for modern day heresy that confuses people and makes its founders and prominent figures rich beyond imagination.
