I like this post. I grew up with tithing instilled in me, and of course, josh did not. he wasn't as stubborn as you were tho ;p anywho, i've been studying malachi, learning interesting things about worship, THEN seeing how tithing fits into this. And it's also interesting to see where this is the only time God tell us to test Him. even when i stress out about money and the future, it's nice knowing that we've been faithful in this one area, and He's so much more faithful than we are anyway, so i'm confident we'll be taken care of. (have u read the treasure principle?)

Angela,
In response to your questions, yes, as I recall our spending changed... some. However, my mindset was horrible, and I can recall thinking that I wasn't going to change much. I was stubborn and honestly, a real booty about it. So I wasn't going to "help God" any.

The stunning reality of stewardship is that when you give to God first - above everything else - it all just falls into place, ordered by Him. This is not a recipe to "get what you want" or to "hold God hostage" in any way. It's a biblical promise from our Father that when we worship Him and place Him in preeminence above all things, including our tired, little checkbooks, that He has assured us that we will be take care of.

So, in response... I dare you. Test God in this and see if He does not throw open the floodgates of blessing. You'll be surprised practically - and even more so, the amazing sense of peace and "rightness" of it is worth the discipline.

I love this! Shaun and I have (and still continue to) experienced this in our married life. Right after we got married, he wasn't making very much money at all. And I was still in school, and having to commute an hour both ways. Looking at his check every month, by the time we would pay the rent and the car payment, it was gone. That's without anything left for gas, groceries, and other bills, much less a tithe. However, that was a commitment we'd made to God and to each other so we faithfully wrote that check each month. And wow, did God work! We always made it, with a little left over. God is always faithful!

Just one question to clarify this story for me? Did you spend differently? When you went to the store did you refrain from buying certain things? Usually you don't spend money that isn't there! Did you write the check to the church and then go on a debt diet? I've heard these stories before, I might have to test God!

What a great post. I love this. God is always faithful...I have a sign that I keep over my computer where I pay my bills that says:
"Give God what's right, not what's left."

It helps me when I think we are never gonna make it...He hasn't failed us yet!
