Tips for a great sermon misses mark

There’s a good post over at churchrelevance.com about making a great presentation. Unfortunately, author Chris Brooks writes about tips for a great sermon. Nowhere in the post is the importance and primacy of scripture mentioned. Perhaps it’s just assumed. it shouldn’t be.

We have too many folks these days spouting off at the mouth and calling that preaching. Preaching should begin with God’s Word and end with God’s heart.

On this day...

  • Jeff,

Chris Brooks is a sponsor of Church Relevance and not the author of the post. I actually wrote it. Yes, I did assume that ministers reading the post would understand that their sermons should have scripture. That’s fundamental. If you take a second look at the post, you will notice that the 10 tips are taken from a secular article on giving presentations. Keep in mind that they are only ten out of thousands of tips and ideas that could be considered for more effective preaching. Of course, scripture should be a part of sermons. It would seem silly otherwise.

  • Kent, thanks for the clarification on the author, and my apologies. I thought I understood the intent of the post, but in this day and age (like I said earlier), it’s important not to assume that others will. In addition, the title of the post was “10 Tips for Great Preaching.” Usually a list like that denotes a summary approach.

I’m glad to know where you’re coming from. Did you go back and rewrite your opener? It reads differently from what I first saw, or I could be imagining that. It wouldn’t be the first time.
